Emmanuel Macron slapped in the face

On a visit to the Drôme department in southern France on Tuesday, the president was slapped in the face by a man as he greeted members of the public who had turned out to see him. Afterwards, Macron, who was pulled away by one of his security team, was bullish① about the incident. He said later, “I will continue going everywhere. We must not give in to violence and particularly violence against public servants. And we mustn’t waste too much time on this.” The man who slapped the president, a 28-year-old named as Damien Tarel, remained in police custody② on Wednesday. As he slapped the president, Tarel was heard to shout “Down with Macron-ism.” Damien Tarel told the court it was an act of impulse, but the prosecutor said it was a “deliberate act of violence.” Prosecutors had called for 18 months in prison for assaulting a public official. The three judges said Tarel should be given 18 months, with 14 months of the sentence suspended. His four months in jail will start immediately but the rest will only be enforced if he commits another offence. (The Guardian & BBC)

Student cheating in national entrance exam

Starting from Monday, more than 10.78 million people sat the annual national college entrance examinations, or the Gaokao, across China. Varying from province to province, generally China’s annual college entrance exam season ran from June 7 to 10 with some regions taking the exam for only two days, while others take it for four days. The country’s biggest exams kicked off① on time despite sporadic② COVID-19 cases in some provinces, with all departments fully prepared. However, a student in Wuhan was disqualified for using a mobile phone to search for answers during China’s national college entrance exam, triggering waves of questions from the public over the invigilation③ system at the examination site. Authorities responded on Tuesday that the 5G signal the student used might have broken the school’s signal shielding, thus enabling the network connection. The student, surnamed Wu, was caught cheating in a math exam on Monday by taking and uploading pictures of part of the test paper onto an online education application where users can search for answers to questions in its database. The local education bureau④ in Huangpi district of Wuhan on Tuesday confirmed Wu’s act in a surveillance video playback and announced that all of Wu’s test results had been invalidated. The invigilators and other relevant personnel at Wu’s exam site had all been disqualified. (Global Times & CGTN & China Daily)

Biden arrives in Europe for first foreign trip as president

President Biden arrived in Europe on Wednesday on his first foreign trip as president as the administration strives to emphasize relationships with U.S. allies. While there, he will participate in both the G7 and NATO summits, as well as an EU-U.S. summit. Mr. Biden’s key message to allies has been that America is back, after former President Donald Trump at times mocked leaders of the nation’s closest allies and championed an “America first” platform. The White House says this trip will focus on America’s commitment to rallying world democracies and defending shared values. But the most closely watched part of the president’s trip will be next week when Mr. Biden has a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The engagement promises particularly high stakes, especially given recent ransomware① attacks in the U.S. committed by hackers that U.S. officials say are in Russia. Mr. Biden told reporters before departing for the United Kingdom that the spate② of cyberattacks targeting U.S. companies will be a subject of his discussions with Putin. (CBS NEWS)

El Salvador makes bitcoin legal tender

El Salvador has become the first country in the world to officially classify Bitcoin as legal currency. Congress approved President Nayib Bukele’s proposal to embrace the cryptocurrency①, with 62 out of 84 possible votes on Tuesday night. The president said the government had made history, and that the move would make it easier for Salvadoreans living abroad to send money home. Bitcoin will become legal tender, alongside the US dollar, in 90 days. The new law means every business must accept Bitcoin as legal tender for goods or services, unless it is unable to provide the technology needed to do the transaction. “It will bring financial inclusion, investment, tourism, innovation and economic development for our country,” President Bukele said in a tweet shortly before the vote. He has previously said the move will open up financial services to the 70% of Salvadoreans who do not have bank accounts. (BBC)
